It’s a Beautiful Sound

IMG_1035 2As I’m writing this, I can hear music drifting down the hallway from the Sanctuary.

“Be strong in the Lord, and in His mighty power…”

There’s a ton of kids in there, pretty much singing their hearts out.  Andrea is accompanying the group on piano and Mariah is doing an amazing job teaching the songs and leading the group in music.  It warms a pastor’s heart to hear the sound of kids singing songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.

And between songs, I hear the sounds of feet running (never walking) from spot to spot around the building…I hear the sound of laughter coming from outside my office as kids are playing games.

These are beautiful sounds.

It’s the sound of faith being lived out in the lives of children.  It’s the sound of faith being passed on from leader to kid.  It’s the sound of kids learning about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.  I love these sounds.

I think we can learn a lot from our children.  There is an innocence, a passion and a willingness to engage in their faith that sometimes I think we as adults miss out on:

  • Where adults hold back, kids jump in.
  • Where adults can be afraid to look like we don’t know the answers, kids ask “why.”
  • Where adults sometimes hold back, kids go full-speed ahead.

‘(Jesus) said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.  Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.’   – Mark 10:14b-16

Now let me be clear, whatever your faith looks like, it is a gift from God, and God is glad for it.  But I watch the kids at VBS this week and I think to myself “I want my faith to be like that.  I want to live and love fully…at the top of my lungs…” It is so clear that these kids have been blessed.  But then I remind myself:  “I have been too!”  So have you.

Faith is a gift given by God.  These kids remind me what a beautiful things it is.  I want to live it like they do.

Blessings!

Pastor Todd
